Primary education emphasizes and provides a wide range of subjects that will enable children to develop their skills and knowledge. The curriculum provides the teaching of English language, Mathematics, Environment Studies, Science, Information Technology, Religion, 2nd Language, and Physical Education. The children are exposed to a variety of reading materials in a well-equipped library. Special attention is given to students to face the year five scholarship exam from the stage of grade three as the students would be able to be ready for the examination.
Students from age 11 years to 14 years are in the junior category The curriculum recognizes the importance of the middle year of schooling to a studentβs overall growth and development. English, 2nd Language, Mathematics, Environment Studies, Science, Information Technology, Religion, Civic, Physical and Health Education are subjects included in the curriculum also this is the stage where students prepare and improve their knowledge for the general certificate of ordinary level examination.
Secondary education in Sri Lanka is basically two sections junior secondary education and senior secondary education. Junior secondary education is from grade six to grade nine. Moreover, Senior secondary education ranges from grade ten to grade thirteen. Therefore, in total, a student has to spend eight years to complete second-year education. Moreover, as in Sri Lanka, after the first national examination which is the grade five scholarship examination, a child can start his/her secondary education regardless of the results of the exam. Therefore, second-year education is a golden opportunity for students to improve their skills in many fields.
This stream started at Mercy Education Institute in 2019. Starting for the first time 29 students enrolled for studying biology and physical science. MERCY has a conducive environment for students to continue their stream for boys and girls. In the two years of the study program, three school terms are given and each stream has 300 teaching hours has been allocated to cover all the subjects. From 2019 to 2021 our students got better results and the institute maintained its values of education to a high standard.
The technology stream is a new stream that commenced in 2013 in Sri Lanka making a turning point in the education sector. It commenced at Mercy Education institute in 2017 with qualified teaching panels. Very first time 17 students entered the university and it was a remarkable achievement and put Mercyβs name in education history. During the 300 hours of study timing, students have ample opportunity to learn and complete their field trips pertaining to their subject also three-term in a year total of six school terms in two years.
We commenced the Arts stream in 2021 at the request of many parents as Mercy Education Institute is a unique place for education, especially for girls. For the very first time, 25 students enrolled in the Arts stream. We have selected Political science and Islamic Civilization as compulsory subjects and Information & communication technology and Agriculture are optional students can choose their preferred subject.
