Admission Procedures of Mercy Education Institute
1. Introduction
Mercy Education Institute hereafter referred to as (MEI) is a private educational and training institute located at Madurankuliya in the North Western Province in a land area of 23 acres. It comprises of 50 classrooms and necessary infrastructural facilities including hostels to accommodate all students from grades 6 to 11 along with nearly 100 trainees who follow NVQ 4 vocational training courses approved by Tertiary Education Commission. Classes for Advanced Level are conducted in an informal setup and hostel facilities are arranged on request.
2. Admission of Students:
Mercy Education Institute provides bilingual education (English-Tamil) according to the National Curriculum of Sri Lanka and its academic year is from January to December. Applications for admission are called by end of September each year. Admission to MEI is done through a competitive examination and selection is made depending on students’ performance. In order to maintain the fairness and equality in the selection the following practices are in place:
2.1. Admission of Students to Grades 1-11
ü Applications for the admission are called through open advertisement in printed and electronic media.
ü Admissions are purely based on competitive examination whereas knowledge of candidate in English, Tamil, Math and Science/ERA is tested and the highest scorers are selected depending on the vacancies available in relevant grades.
ü Orphan children are given concessions in deciding the cutout marks and they are privileged to enjoy free education and other facilities.
ü All selected students other than orphans should pay the registration and monthly fee decided by the Board of Management annually. However, siblings of present students are given concession only in paying the registration fee.
Admission of Students to Advanced Level Classes
Mercy Education Institute conducts tuition classes for Advanced Level students in all streams according to the National Curriculum of Sri Lanka. Students are admitted to the classes soon after the GCE O/L examination and the following practices are in place:
ü Applications for the admission are called through open advertisement in printed and electronic media.
ü Admissions are based on the performance of GCE O/L examination along with formal test and/or interview to confirm the candidates’ suitability in terms of subject choice and affordability.
ü All selected students should pay the registration and monthly fee decided by the Board of Management annually
2.2. Admission of Trainees for Vocational Training Courses
ü Applications for the admission are called from those who underperformed in the GCE O/L examination through open advertisement in printed and electronic media.
ü Selection is done through formal test and/or interview to confirm the candidates’ suitability in terms of technical skills, behaviour, social recognition and affordability.
ü All selected students should pay the registration and monthly fee decided by the Board of Management annually. However, existing students and their siblings are given concession only in paying the registration fee.
ü Trainees following a certain course during an academic year can get admission to follow another course after successful completion of the previous course in the successive academic year without paying registration fee.
2.3. Admission of Students to Professional Courses
ü Applications for the admission are called through open advertisement in printed and electronic media from those who possesses necessary qualification stipulated for each course.
ü Selection is done through formal test and/or interview to confirm the candidates’ suitability in terms of subject knowledge, conduct and affordability.
ü All selected students should pay the registration and monthly fee decided by the Board of Management annually.
ü Students can follow simultaneously two courses paying registration fee for either of the courses provided that they pay monthly fee for both courses.
3. Termination of Students
The studentship at Mercy Education Institute is terminated in the following circumstances, when:
ü a student/trainee completes or ceases his/her course of study.
ü the student/trainee is not willing to stay in the hostel environment for any reason whatsoever where it is applicable.
ü the student/trainee is not willing to continue his/her course of study at MEI.
ü a parent wishes to take his/her child to the home environment where it is applicable.
ü a student/trainee fails to pay the monthly fee for two consecutive months.
ü a student/trainee becomes physically or mentally not fit to stay in the hostel and follow his/her study.
ü a student/trainee violates the students’ code of conduct or rules & regulations of MEI.
